Hundreds of tourists watch sun’s alignment on Abu Simbel

Hundreds of Egyptian and foreign tourists stood by the ancient Abu Simbel temple in Aswan to watch the sun’s alignment on the face of the statue of Pharaonic king Ramses II.
 
This rare astronomical phenomenon observed by tourists twice a year: 22 February, which marks the king’s assumption of the throne, and 22 October, his birthday.
 
Aswan governor Mostafa Yousry, Social Solidarity Minister Ahmed al-Boraie and ambassadors of 30 countries attended the event.
 
Ahmed Saleh, director of the Abu Simbel Antiquities department, said the phenomenon started at 6:23am and lasted for 20 minutes, with sun rays passing 60 meters through the columns hall to the Holy of Holies.
 
Ashraf Mokhtar, a member at the tourism chamber, said several tourists were unable to enter the area due to the high turnout and ticketing delay.

Psamtik I is found, 26th Dynasty discovery in Delta

discovery of a mud brick mastaba dated back to Late period. The Mastaba was discovered by the Egyptian team while excavating in Tell Tebila in Dakahliya governorate in Delta.
The mastaba measures 7 x 10 meters divided into burial shafts.
 The team found a limestone sarcophagus in the Mastaba dated back to the 2nd century B.C. for a woman called Werty daughter of Rtrs. The sarcophagus is 1.77 meters length, 37 cm width by the feet and 70 cm width by the chest. The mummy was found in the sarcophagus in a good shape of preservation."

Egypt to repatriate antiquities from Germany

 The customs in Stuttgart seized and confiscated 3 antiquities which were smuggled to Germany in 2009 during an attempt to smuggle them into Belgium.
German authorities kept them at the Egyptian Museum in Berlin until the High court of Freiburg decided that Egypt has the right to repatriate them.
The objects are; a small obelisk dated back to Old Kingdom, Late Period group statue and a New kingdom niche.
The obelisk is made if limestone and it bears hieroglyphs inscription on one of its sides refer to "The revered by King Khufu"
The group statue is made if black granite represents a lady called "Bsin Hat Sett" and her children who held titles show the high position they have reached.
Horus niche which used to have a statues of Horus inside. There is a scene representing Prince "Khaemwaset", son of Ramses II make an offering to God Horus.


Gamaliya Street to be turned into ‘open-air museum

El-Moez Street is home to vendors of anything and everything colourful, blinking and shiny
The Ministry of Antiquities, the governorate of Cairo and the Ministry of Interior have begun implementing a project involving the closing off of Gamaliya Street in the historic Old Cairo and converting it into an open-air museum for pedestrians, similarly to the famous Al-Moez Street, said Minister of Antiquities Mohamed Ibrahim. The minister confirmed that the plan has been approved by the cabinet.
Ibrahim clarified that the project to convert the street into a pedestrian-only zone and museum comes under the bigger goal of renovating historic Cairo with a cost of up to EGP 56m, which includes renovating facades and floors on the street from Bab Al-Nasr to Mashhad Al-Husseiny as well as the area from the intersection of Ghouri Mosque and Al-Azhar Street to Bab Zuweila.
